It has only been a few weeks since the official release of Apple's 3.0 firmware. Today 3.1 beta has been announced to developers. We don't have any information about new features or changes yet, but we will keep you updated.

Speed improvements. Apps start + exit quicker, and connecting to WiFi + 3G networks takes less time.
Bug Fixes. One of which includes the black text in the iPod app staying white when pressed, etc.
New effects, like transparent status/navigation bars for the Safari + Mail app, and a new Popup animation.

And he's back, folks. Six months after Steve Jobs took a medical leave from Apple due to health reasons, the company has announced that he's back on the job, working a "few days a week" on the Apple campus and from home the remainder. Of course, we'd been hearing of Steve's continual involvement in "key aspects" of Apple's business for a while now, so this seems like more of a rubber stamp on the status quo than a major change, but now that it's official we're sure the questions from shareholders and other interested parties regarding Steve's health will only grow louder and more insistent -- especially given the news of his liver transplant earlier this year. We'll see how Apple decides to handle the situation when the time comes -- until then, we're just thankful that he's returned and is doing well.

It looks as if the iPhone 3G[S] has been jailbroken by not only George Hotz, but the Dev Team as well! A post made on the iPhone Dev-Team's blog states why the jailbrek won't be released for a while. Here's the first pictures of the iPhone 3G[S] jailbroken!

It has the same bootrom exploit as ipod touch 2g

    QUOTE
About 5 hours ago (Thursday evening, less than a week after the 3GS launch), we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can use the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

For our technical notes on where the 24Kpwn exploit is in the 3GS, see here (pastebin hash of it is here). Our original blog post for when this exploit was first found is here.

And yes, ultrasn0w will be able to be used on the iPhone 3GS for you unlockers! (In fact, without any modifications whatsoever!)

Important: Apple has not given up on the cat&mouse game, and in fact there are challenging aspects of the 3GS jailbreak that aren’t in the other devices. It’ll take some time to safely work these into our tools, but the fundamental weaknesses are there: The bootrom is exploitable via 24Kpwn, and the baseband is exploitable via ultrasn0w. (And just like with the 3G, ultrasn0w for 3GS requires that you not update your baseband when Apple comes out with new firmware.)

Steven Troughton-Smith has posted a video demo of Stack v3.0 which will add stacks capability to the iPhone OS.

This version actually allows for multiple stacks by implement the stack as an icon which can be moved anywhere on your SpringBoard.

On a whim, I'd rewritten Stack to actually be an icon in SpringBoard. It can be moved anywhere, has all the same positioning and reordering abilities as any other icon, it doesn't interfere with other apps, and is generally the cleanest and best way I could ever implement Stacks (yes, with an 's', there can be more than one now!). It took an awful lot of hacking around and programming blind to pull it off, but I think it's gonna work really well.

You can see the video demo of Stack v3.0 Alpha 1 below. Hit the link for more info or to donate towards this project...

Update: The app is no longer available in the itunes appstore

Update 2: Well, it seems that it wasn’t pulled out by Apple but the app sold out, according to a note by the developer. It should be back up soon. For people like pfish get it here in the mean time tongue.gif http://appulo.us/appdb/?page=viewapp&id=8488

Well, at least it took longer than push notification or turn-by-turn navigation, right?

As should be no surprise, given how the porn industry is typically among the first to adapt to new technologies, Macenstein reports that the first app to feature nudity has made it into the iTunes App Store.

The app is rated 17+ for frequent/intense sexual content or nudity, and frequent/intense mature/suggestive theme. This means the new Settings > General > Restrictions > feature for parental controls in iPhone 3.0 can be used to globally allow or block the app (or any app based on several age-based levels). MacRumors explains the results:

If an App falls outside of the allowed rating they will simply disappear off your home screen. Once you turn the restrictions off again, the affected apps reappear.

This should mean we don’t see any more app rejections for search-based language or content, but it also leads us to wonder how long it will be before we see major adult entertainment companies come knocking on the App Store door…

iSupply gets a lots of headlines, like this one from Reuters, guestimating the raw component costs of popular gadgets like the iPhone 3GS. And good for them.

Media literacy 101, however, demands we remind again that the iPhone 3GS didn’t pop into consumers’ hands fully formed from a Star Trek transporter or the toes of the frost-giant Ymir (Bing it). It cost money to research and develop both hardware and software, to design and prototype, to test and certify, and it cost money to manufacture, to ship, to stock, to advertise, and to sell.

Even if we stick to iSupply’s guesstimates of raw component costs, to paraphrase Aaron Sorkin’s hyperbole, while the second iPhone 3GS may have cost $179, the first one cost a billion dollars.

So take that $179 number you’ll see all over the net with a grain of salt before you start knocking on the door at 1 Infinite Loop demanding your iPhone 3GS at “cost”.

Stack is one of the oldest and most popular additions to your iPhone or iPod touch that adds a quick-launch menu to your Dock, giving rapid access to your favourite applications. Now compatible with iPhone 3.0! First released in October 2007, Stack has several hundred thousand users.

Simply tap the Stack and it will unfurl across your screen, then tap any icon to open it. Drag & Hover an icon (but don't let go!) across the Stack to add an application to it; drag an icon out of the Stack and let go to remove it. Drag the Stack in the dock to reposition it, then tap anywhere on the screen to finish.

Stack also has a Grid View mode, for those times when the Stack has too many items to fit onscreen at once.

Simply install using 'dpkg -i stack2_2.deb'. Requires MobileSubstrate.

You'll need to enable the Preferences Bundle after installing Stack. Use:

    '/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper --installPrefBundle '

Keep in mind that Extended Preferences or similar applications can cause the Stack option not to show.

If you want to uninstall, use:

    '/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper --removePrefBundle '
    'dpkg -r com.steventroughtonsmith.stack '
